Moving Tips
Movers Tips and Helpful Suggestions
Movers Liability
Be sure to use a moving company that is fully licensed and insured. But what does that mean?
Even though a moving company may be "fully licensed and insured" understand the level of cargo coverage a mover is required to provide, at no charge, is very minimal. It's called "60 cents per pound per article" valuation coverage. That means a computer that weighs 20 pounds times 60 cents = $12 maximum carrier liability. A 20 pound brick times 60 cents = the same $20 maximum carrier liability.
The valuation coverage that is included for free has nothing to do with the actual value of an item, only its weight. Most moving companies have available additional levels of valuation coverage, usually full value coverage with various deductibles, or actual cash value coverage. These additional options generally cost additional money.
In addition, there are a number of exclusions and limitations to carrier liability regardless of valuation selected.
Be sure your moving company outlines valuation coverage included, along with additional valuation coverage available, along with exclusions and limitations to carrier liability.
How Much $$$ For A Local Move?
Local moving is usually charged for by the hour. Depending upon where you are located (high cost labor market vs. lower cost labor market) determines the hourly rate. In addition some local movers charge for fuel and certainly for any packing materials used.
Other important factors include how much do you need to move? What is the access like, such as single story house with good access or high rise apartment with elevator or stairs or a 600 foot carry? Would you say your items are very high end (takes longer to wrap and protect) or just basic kid and family worn items (able to move more quickly)? Who will do the packing of boxes, you or the mover?
These are all factors that come into play when moving locally or by the hour.
For moving only (not packing of boxes) you should figure upon a range of anywhere from $75 per room up to as much as $400 per room depending upon the factors listed above. When counting rooms don't forget to include the patio or outside as a room if there are items there, also include your garage. Depending upon how much is in your garage that may count as anywhere from 1 to 6 rooms, especially if you have it packed floor to ceiling and wall to wall with furniture and items.
As an example one person may have 4 rooms of standard items, sparsely furnished with good access, the next person's 4 rooms may be very heavily furnished with fine furniture and difficult access. Based upon how long the move takes the range might be from $300 for the first person, and up to $1600 for the next person.
In addition, if you have the movers do a full packing of boxes, labor and materials often is close to equal to the cost of the moving in a standard home.
For an accurate estimate be sure to tell the mover all of the factors outlined above. That way there should not be any surprises for anyone during the move. Good luck.
Book Movers In Advance
The best moving companies usually book well in advance. Sometimes as much as 3 to 6 weeks in advance for high demand periods.
High demand dates usually include every Friday and Saturday. Also sometimes Sundays, and for local movers understand many of the best movers request Sundays off after working all week.
In addition month end is usually a very high demand period. The last weekend of every month and also several days before and after the end of every month are usually high demand.
We suggest if you want to do moving on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays - - - or at the end or beginning of a month that you book at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance.
Days that are usually less in demand are mid month Mondays thru Thursdays. For these days you can often book with less notice.
If you wait until the last minute to book for high demand periods you may very well find the best movers are simply not available.
Hot Day? Cold Drinks for the Movers
If you are moving on a hot day expect your movers to put in a very hard and thirsty days' work on your behalf. Often your movers will bring their own drinks, but sometimes they may forget, or just rely upon tap water from your faucets.
You can start the day in a positive way by perhaps having an ice chest with cold drinks (no alcohol obviously) available for everyone, including yourselves and the movers.
Your movers will be immediately grateful. This will translate into movers that are properly hydrated throughout the day, but also your initial gesture should provide for a positive working environment between yourself and the movers for the balance of the day.
Packing Dishes and Glassware
Start with heavy duty double wall cartons, or if not available use small and medium cartons. Tape the bottom seam with at least 3 strips of tape.
The most important protection you can provide when packing these items is use lots of packing medium. Whether it be unprinted news (best value) or bubble wrap or foam wrap, use plenty.
First, cushion the bottom of your box with a layer of wadded up paper. Use unprinted newspaper if possible. All quality movers or packing supply stores have unprinted news available. Even office supply stores often carry this paper.
Wrap breakable plates individually, then bundle together 3-5 plates in a few pieces of paper. Stand the bundle vertically in your box. Never lay glass or plates flat.
For glasses, stemware, etc. wrap each glass individually. Best is to stand the glasses side by side.
Finish the box by filling any space in the top with more wadded up paper to achieve a tight seal when closing the box. Tape the top of the box with at least 2 strips of tape.
Be sure to magic marker "Fragile" on the box and which room it goes to.
Important Personal Belongings
Before your movers arrive, pack a few small cartons with your important personal belongings. Items such as plane tickets, car keys, purse or wallet, insurance papers, home owner papers, and anything else that you want to make sure doesn't get accidentally loaded onto the movers truck or trailer.

Place these small cartons somewhere safe, such as in your car, or designate an area in your home and inform the movers not to take these boxes. Also, label these boxes either with a magic marker, or better yet, tape a large piece of paper on each box instructing the movers not to move these items.
