Meatloaf for Movers

Yesterday being Fathers Day I was back in the kitchen cooking up a storm. My father requested meatloaf, so I decided to do the mash potatoes, corn, the whole nine yards thing for my family.

Reminded me of a time out on the road while making a delivery just west of Minot N.D. We were moving a grandmother from Los Angeles to the family farm in Washington. The main house looked like something straight from the Little House on the Prairie. The guest house was a quaint place a stones throw from the main house. The houses were both surrounded by corn.

It was probably around 12:30 pm, we had just started working away unloading the truck when someone from the house came down and said time to take a break, dinner is being served. My partner and I looked at each other and thought, hmmm, dinner, what the heck it’s only 12:30?

We were reluctant to accept the offer since we had other shipments to off load and miles to drive, but the pigs that we were did not matter to them. It was the most unusual hour and a half I have ever spent at a dinner table. I felt like we were sitting at the table with the Walton’s. Here it was 12:30 in the afternoon and we were eating this big huge meatloaf dinner with all the fixings and apple pie for dessert.

There was about 8 of us, one of them may have been named John Boy. Apparently, because they all get up so early to start their daily chores, they eat breakfast at 3:30 in the morning. And then because they work so hard out in the fields they have to eat a full blown dinner in the early afternoon. Supper is in the early evening and that basically consists of a small snack before bed.

Those were some of the nicest people I have ever met and man what a meal !! Everyday day but Sunday was a Thanksgiving feast at that house. Wonder if they are still there? If they sold the farm and moved away.
