Moving With Kids

family moving into new home

Just relocating your things to a house down the street can be a complicated task. But moving across the country and traveling with your kids is where things can become overwhelming. Kids are affected the most in a move. Having to say goodbye to their first set of friends and then having to make new ones can lead to uncomfortable situations.

The two words I can think of when it comes to relocating with kids are assurance and involvement. First let them know and understand the harsh feelings of a move. Tell them how the move affects you and then assure them that everything is going to be fine.

Let them get involved with as much of the move as possible. Leave the actual moving aspects to the movers but get the kids involved with the smaller aspects like the packing and decorating the new home. Assign them fun chores to do before the move like decorating and labeling different boxes.

Make sure when moving that you have handy all the emergency items that kids need. It can turn into a disaster if one of your kids gets hurt and the first-aid kit is packed in some box nowhere to be found. Some items that should be kept at hand during a move are: First-aid kits, inhalers, medication, food/snacks, water, their stuffed animals, or whatever else your child would need.

The main aspect when moving with your children is to try and make them have fun with whatever they are doing. Keep them informed and up to date with all the situations of the move. Do not leave them out of the loop on anything. If your child does not seem to adjust well to the move then talk to them, or if it is very serious then seek professional help.
