Tuesday, November 30, 2010
Family Packing

For packing small pictures, such as 8 x 11 framed pictures, wrap similar to dishes - each one in sufficient packing paper, then stand upright or vertically in the carton - do not lay flat.  Be sure to put wadded up paper in the bottom and top of the box for cushioning.

Use Your Luggage * Use your suit cases and duffle bags to fill with clothes, sheets or other fabricated items. Otherwise you will not be using these resources effectively.

Filing a Complaint With the FMCSA * File a complaint with the FMCSA or call 1-888-368-7238. They can't help you repair damaged goods or find loosed items, but they can put the mover on notice.

Know The Rules of The Road in Different Areas * Be sure to research driving laws in the areas you are driving to. Rules and regulations of the road may vary according to the state you are in.

Hazardous Materials Moving - Do's and Don't * Do not pack hazardous materials with your household goods without your mover's knowledge. Never pack anything that could be dangerous to your movers truck and contents. If your not sure, ask your mover before packing it.

Contact The Post Office * Contact the post office and file for a change of address.

Custom Picture, Mirror and Glass Top Packing * Pictures and mirrors often require customized packing due to their varying sizes and shapes. Tools and materials needed to facilitate this custom packing include paper pads (for wrapping the pictures), picture sections (pieces of cardboard for packing), and box cutter for custom cutting of the picture sections.

Not All Movers Are Licensed * Make sure the mover you choose is registered with the FMCSA and has a USDOT license number. This is the most important aspect in choosing a mover. There are many movers not licensed, and hiring one could spell big trouble.

Moving Terms - Estimate * Estimate: All charges for services the mover will perform. Understand the terms of the estimate so there will be no misunderstanding on the job the movers will perform.

Shuttle Truck for Small Road Access * Shuttle Service: Use of a smaller truck to provide service to residences that are not accessible to the mover's normal truck. If you live up in the hills on a small winding road, chances are the big moving truck will not be able to make it to the house and a smaller truck will be needed. Driveways can also be a problem as well.

Packing Antiques * Items such as grandfather clocks and other valuable antiques should be packed and secured by a relocation expert.
