10 Useful Packing Tips For Moving
Couple Moving
  1. Start finding boxes and cartons about a month or so prior to the move date. Department stores and wholesale stores are great sources for boxes. Home Depot and Lowe's sell boxes cheaper than any moving company or box store.

  2. Get rid of items that won't be moved or packed. Have a garage sale or put items into storage.

  3. Gather packing materials prior to packing. Some useful packing materials include: boxes, tape, packing paper, markers, and box cutters.

  4. Pack room by room and label the boxes according to content and the room it belongs.

  5. Be sure to have plenty of filling material for the boxes. Packing dishes and fragile items can become a disaster if not enough padding has been used.

  6. A general rule for packing: Heavy items go into small boxes, and light items go into large boxes.

  7. When packing clothes on hangers, wardrobe boxes will be needed. Wardrobe boxes are usually about 4 feet tall and 2 feet by 2 feet around. These boxes can support two feet of hanging clothes.

  8. The most important part of packing tips is the plan. Plan it out over the course of a couple weeks. It is best to do a little here and a little there.

  9. Use items such as towels and linens for padding. This eliminates the need to pack those goods while being efficient.

  10. Create a few boxes for easy access. These boxes are for day to day items and are to be opened first during the unpacking process.

Here are a few other packing tips when learning how to pack

Packing Tip: Plan out exactly what you are going to move into your new home and consider short-term and long-term storage options if needed.  When considering storage options, take into account length of time and total cost of storage vs. length of time in storage.  You'd be surprised how many people will spend thousands of dollars storing items that have very little value.

Packing Tip: Do not pack flammables and combustibles. Get rid of your petrol, paints, and empty the gasoline in your lawn mowers and weed whackers before moving. Also contact your local gas grill distributor for the safest method to drain your barbeque propane tank.

Packing Tip: For packing dishes, wrap them individually with packing paper, wrap 4-6 wrapped dishes together in a bundle. Be sure to stand them upright in a heavy duty box. Do NOT lay flat.  For larger platters and plates use your towels and other small linens for wrapping.
